How to Spot the Best Cruise Advisors
No ranking list can tell you who suits your trip. These signs can, in the first conversation.
Talk to a Personal Cruise PlannerGreat Advisors Ask Before They Answer
The best cruise advisors rarely open with a price. They want to know how you like to spend a sea day, whether you go to bed early or late, if anyone gets seasick, which past trips you loved, and whether the budget is a ceiling or a guide. If the first thing you hear is a fare, you are talking to an order-taker, which is fine for a simple booking and frustrating for anything more.
They Explain the Trade-Offs
Every recommendation carries a cost of some kind: a lower fare with a stricter cancellation rule, a perfect itinerary on an older ship, a central cabin on a lower deck. A strong advisor names those trade-offs so you choose with your eyes open.

Signs of Training and Experience
Industry bodies such as CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) run certification programmes for cruise sellers, and many lines run their own training. A certificate is a good sign, not a guarantee. Ask which lines and regions the advisor books most often, and whether they have sailed on the ship they are suggesting or one like it.
They Follow Through After the Deposit
The real test comes later. Do they remind you before final payment? Do they tell you when a promotion appears that your booking can use? Do they reply when your flight is cancelled? Ask former clients, and ask the advisor directly what they do between booking and sailing. Our stage-by-stage guide is a fair yardstick.
Warning Signs
- Pressure to pay today for a deal that “disappears tonight”, with no written terms.
- Vague answers about who you are actually paying.
- No interest in your past trips or who is travelling.
- Quotes that leave out taxes, port fees or what is not included.
- Silence once the deposit has cleared.
Before your first call, it helps to have a short list of your own questions; Ask a Cruise Specialist keeps a thorough one. Luxury travellers will find more on judging specialists at Luxury Cruise Consultant.
How We Hold Ourselves to This
Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise use the same standards: questions first, trade-offs named, every quote in writing, and follow-through until you are home.
A Simple Scorecard
After your first conversation with any advisor, score them from one to five on each of these. The best cruise advisors score well on all of them, not only on price.
| Question | What a high score looks like |
|---|---|
| Did they ask about you before quoting? | Questions on travellers, pace, past trips and deal-breakers |
| Did they explain the options? | Two to four choices, each with a reason and a trade-off |
| Was the quote complete? | Cabin, fare rules, taxes and fees, inclusions, all in writing |
| Did they mention the rest of the trip? | Flights, hotel, insurance and transfers raised without prompting |
| Would you call them in a crisis? | Clear contact details and a plan for travel-day problems |
Keep your scorecards. If you cruise again in a year or two, they remind you who earned your trust and why, and they make a second conversation much shorter.
