Personal Vacation Planner or Independent Advisor?

Some cruise lines give you a planner of their own. Here is how that role differs from an independent advisor who works across many lines.

The Cruise Line’s Own Planner

Several cruise lines run in-house sales teams with friendly titles. Carnival, for example, calls its reps Personal Vacation Planners; Carnival’s Personal Vacation Planners page describes them as dedicated representatives who work with guests one to one. Other lines use their own names for similar roles. A personal vacation planner at a cruise line can be knowledgeable and genuinely helpful about that brand’s ships, cabins and promotions.

The key fact is who they work for: the line. They will help you choose between that line’s ships, not between that line and its competitors. If you are already sure of the brand, that may be all you need.

The Independent Advisor

An independent cruise advisor sells many lines. That lets them say “for what you have described, a different company is a better fit”, which a line’s own planner cannot. They can also bundle flights, hotels, insurance and excursions from different suppliers, and they stay with you if you switch brands next year.

Which One Should You Use?

  • Loyal to one line and happy with it: the line’s own planner can be a simple option.
  • Choosing between lines, ships or styles of cruise: an independent advisor is built for that.
  • Travelling with several cabins, mixed ages or complex flights: an independent advisor who coordinates the whole trip.
  • Unsure: ask both the same three questions and compare the answers.

Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise are independent and quote across the major lines. For answers to common booking questions, Ask a Cruise Specialist keeps a long list.

Questions to Put to Either Kind of Planner

Whether you speak to a line’s personal vacation planner or an independent advisor, the same three questions reveal a lot:

  • “Given what I have told you, which ship would you not recommend, and why?”
  • “What exactly is included in this fare, and what will I pay for once aboard?”
  • “If a better promotion appears after I book, will you tell me, and can it be applied?”

A line’s planner may answer the first question only within one brand, which is fine if you are committed to it. An independent advisor should be able to compare across companies. Listen for specifics rather than slogans: deck numbers, fare rules and real trade-offs. Write the answers down; comparing them side by side often makes the decision for you. If both answers are equally good, choose the person you would rather call when a flight is cancelled on the way to the port.
